Proceedings from the National Invitational Conference on Racial and Ethnic Data. February 6, 1976. L'enfant Plaza Hotel, Washington, D.C.
Abramowitz, Elizabeth, Ed.
The use of racial and ethnic data in forwarding the aims of equal educational opportunity in higher education is the topic addressed by this conference. Its aim is to highlight problems and propose measures that a) resolve inconsistencies and conflicts in the data, and 2) identify policy questions for which racial and ethnic data in higher education are needed. Among the topics that are addressed are the following: 1) race, poverty, and the colleges, 2) racial enrollments in postsecondary education, 3) the rationale for racial and ethnic data collection, and 4) the ethnic and legal considerations in racial data collection. Other concerns expressed include: 1) the adequacy of available data and its uses or nonuses, 2) what kinds of data are needed to answer policy questions, 3) what policy issues can be addressed through racial data, and 4) are more data, or rather better data needed.
