A Taste of Country: A Pre-Service Teacher Rural Field Trip
Sharplin, Elaine
Education in Rural Australia, v20 n1 p17-27 2010
In order to improve recruitment of teachers to rural schools, preservice teachers need opportunities to become familiar with rural education contexts, overcome anxieties promoted by negative stereotypes and build confidence in their professional and personal abilities. Traditional approaches involve rural practicums which are not feasible for many preservice teachers. The Rural Education Field Trip provides an alternative mechanism for promoting familiarity with rural schools in a cost and time effective manner. This paper describes the Rural Education Field Trip offered by The University of Western Australia, identifying the benefits perceived by a variety of stakeholders. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.)
