Breaking the Cycle of Failure: Marie Carbo's Practical Strategies for Reading Success. (Discussion Guide; Three Video Programs.)
Carbo, Marie; Eakin, Sybil, Ed.
This discussion guide features plans for three workshops, each accompanying one of the 20-minute video programs in the series "Breaking the Cycle of Failure: Marie Carbo's Practical Strategies for Reading Success." The three programs present an overview of the need for teaching based on children's reading styles, the effect of using the method, directions for implementation, and a number of different strategies available to practitioners who adopt this method for teaching reading. The video programs (Part 1: Overview; Part 2: Identifying Reading Styles and Effective Teaching Strategies; and Part 3: More Effective Teaching Strategies) and the associated sections of the discussion guide serve as the centerpiece for 90-minute staff development workshops. Each section contains a plan for a workshop, but it can also be used as background information for individual trainers, administrators, and practitioners involved in self-study. The guide contains suggestions for opening each workshop, discussion questions to help participants focus on the topic before and after viewing the video, and worksheets and information sheets (some of which are reproducible). Seven previously published articles by Marie Carbo are attached. (RS)
