Persistence of Fall 1988 ENGL 330/335 Students through Transfer Level English (1A) over Four Academic Years (Fall 1988-Spring 1992). Research Report #267.

In fall 1992, a study was conducted at Evergreen Valley College (EVC) and San Jose City College (SJCC), in California, to measure the persistence rate of fall 1988 developmental English students (ENGL 330 at EVC; ENGL 335 at SJCC) through transfer level English (1A) over 4 academic years. Results of the study included the following: (1) of the 152 new students with no previous college experience starting in English 330 at EVC, 20% achieved transfer level English competence within 4 academic years; (2) of the 96 new students with no previous college experience starting in English 335 at SJCC in fall 1988, 21% achieved transfer level competence within 4 academic years; (3) for the EVC group, 23% of the male and 17% of the female students achieved transfer level; (4) for the SJCC group, 23% of the male and 19% of the female achieved transfer level; (5) at EVC, Black students had the highest persistence rate (33%), followed by Hispanics (20%), Asians (19%), and Whites (10%); (6) at SJCC, Whites had the highest persistence rate (33%), followed by Asians (23%), Blacks (19%), and Hispanics (17%); (7) at EVC, the highest persistence rate was found for Black females (45%), while the lowest persistence rate was for White females (0%); and (8) at SJCC, the highest persistence rate belonged to other males (40%), while the lowest persistence rate was for White males, and Black and other females, (0%).
