Physical Appearance and Student/Teacher Interactions
Perlmutter, David L.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n7 p52-57 Mar 2005
Scientific and cultural research suggests that attractiveness does affect the ways that people perceive and respond to each other. In this paper, the author talks about the impact of one's appearance in academe as well as in the relationship between students and professors. From the research literature, popular writings, and many comments from his colleagues of other schools, the author is convinced that looks play a role in student-teacher interactions everywhere, whether the institutions are large public universities or small private colleges. Many faculty members in certain disciplines judge students by how they dress and on their looks. To overcome these biases and the basic problem of "looks-ism," he suggests professors to pay attention to the issue and give time to uncover the students' character and evaluate how they have performed on papers, projects, and exams rather than how attractive they are.
