"The Moving Figure" unit of study examines the relationship between observation, expression, and memory drawing techniques with second year college-level Illustration students. The goal of the exercises is to foster the development of a personal artistic voice in drawing by asking the students to directly place themselves in-situ within an event or environment to depict figures in motion. This 7-week module has been taught over 6 years with 18 groups of approximately 20 students. The conclusions regarding the development of a personal artistic voice are formed through comparison to work in courses incorporating more traditional life-drawing techniques and through two group critique sessions led by the instructor during the course of the module. The observation is that students do develop more confidence in their drawing skills by being asked to produce a large amount of work within a compressed time frame. Not having the time to labor over a drawing and be overly concerned with detail and accuracy helps the student to draw with more expression and intuition. The critiques foster self reflection and greater engagement with their approach to drawing, moving them forward toward their search for a personal artistic voice. This unit of study encourages students to step outside their comfort zone and capture figures in motion. Relying on memory as well as personal experience, they turn their focus from accuracy and detail to expression and intuition.
