Frazier, Deneen; And Others
This book seeks to direct children to Internet resources that are educational and fun, that spark ideas for projects, or that connect them to people of similar interests. The foreword is by United States Senator Bob Kerrey. The chapters are: (1) "The World of the Internet," which presents brief explanations of a wide range of services from electronic mail to Internet Relay Chat (IRC) as well as the use of communications software; (2) "Crisscrossing the Globe," which includes guides to finding international keypals and to locating maps; (3) "Challenged by the Best," a discussion of how to use the Internet to exchange ideas with authors, scientists, researchers, and inventors; (4) "There's Power in Numbers," which discusses the use of the Internet to become an informed world citizen; (5) "Looking for Answers," about Internet reference aids; (6) "Adventures in Cyberspace," about planning "virtual trips" and online contests; (7) "Share Your Ideas," a guide to creative collaboration via the Internet; (8) "The World is a Lab," which recommends the Internet as a scientific research tool; and (9) "Take a Walk on the Wild Side," which includes discussion about Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs), virtual reality, and creating one's own homepage. Appendices provide student essays about their Internet experiences, a categorized directory of Internet resources largely comprised of listservs and World Wide Web sites, and tips on installing and using a web browser called NetCruiser.
