From Digital Divide to Digital Democracy.
de los Santos, Gerardo E., Ed.; de los Santos, Alfredo G., Jr., Ed.; Milliron, Mark David, Ed.
This publication is one of many efforts of the League for Innovation in the Community College to address the issue of societal technology access and learning needs. This work addresses the issue of the digital divide, which includes the often conflicting perspectives of information technology (IT) access and literacy needs held by government officials, policy makers, and educators. Focusing on the community college sector of the digital divide debate, this book describes the changing nature of the discussion. It discusses the issue from the perspective of urban, rural, suburban, and tribal colleges, and of African American, Hispanic, and female students. The nine chapters are as follows: (1) "The Digital Divide Redefined: Some Progress Made, But the Gap Remains"; (2) "The Community College: On-Ramp to the Cyberhighway"; (3) "Subdivisions: The Digital Divide in Suburban Communities"; (4) "Rural Community Colleges and the Digital Divide"; (5) "Hispanics, the Digital Divide, and Community Colleges"; (6) "We Have the Hook-Up: Developing Effective Technology Programs for the African-American Community"; (7) "Technological Innovation via Education: Some Guidelines for Building Partnerships with Tribal Communities"; (8) "Tunneling Through the Cyberpipes: Women in Technology in the Community College"; and (9) "On the Road to DotCalm in Education." Each chapter contains references. (NB)
