Code, Kimberly P.
Understanding Our Gifted, v19 n4 p10-12 Sum 2007
Technology is an essential part of young people's lives. Students today are digital natives who cannot remember a time without electronic media and technologies. Children who use the Internet spend 37 percent less time watching television and 16 percent more time with friends and family. The Internet is an excellent resource for differentiating instruction for gifted students of all ages. It can be used to provide students with greater depth and breadth of advanced information that cannot be found in many school and community libraries. Students are able to use online features of their computers to enrich and accelerate their learning. They are able to gather and analyze information, create professional products, and share with authentic audiences. Many different technologies such as web portals, podcasts, and digital audio are noteworthy technology resources. The author describes technology resources and provides examples that have been used with gifted and talented students. The Internet is the most comprehensive collection of information for gifted and talented students of all ages. It provides a forum for in-depth research, communication with like-minded researchers, and authentic audiences for publication of student works. It is exciting to imagine the effect of the Internet and other emerging technologies on the intellectual and social development of gifted and talented youngsters, as well as on the pursuit of their interests and passions.
