The Assessment-Intervention of Student Problems (AISP) model provides a comprehensive process for understanding and helping students who are either having problems themselves or are causing problems for others on campus. There are three parts to the model: (1) the assessment of the student; (2) the campus intervention team; and (3) the intervention. Though all are essential, the main focus is on the first part, assessment of the student, because general assessment of student problems is a responsibility for all staff members, whereas the campus intervention team and intervention skills tend to be the prime responsibility of the supervisory and administrative staff. All, however, are discussed in this chapter. Students services professionals must be able to perform general assessment of student problems and make appropriate referrals. They have the right to expect the kind of support and structure offered by some form of campus intervention team. Working together, the professional and the team can be of significant help to students. It is hoped that the AISP model will be a useful tool in making the task both easier and more effective.
