Science Standards: Making Them Work for You. Grades 5 and 6. Facilitator's Guide.
Famellette, Judy
This facilitator's guide, and the videotape it accompanies, is designed to demonstrate ways in which the new visions of science education for the 21st century might be translated into classroom practice. The National Research Council's (NRC) National Science Education Standards, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Benchmarks for Science Literacy, and other frameworks were used as guides in developing this series. The videotape presents views of real classrooms where science is being taught. Classroom situations are spontaneous and unscripted. The videotape shows how standards actually look in practice in the classroom and how teachers are guiding experiences that enable students to construct understanding and learn science processes. The guide contains information on conducting hands-on workshops including materials lists, materials sources, and handouts. The videotape focuses on grades 5 and 6. In one lesson, students learn to take their pulse rates at rest and after exercise as part of a life science study of the human body. In another unit, students are challenged to make layers of four mystery liquids in a straw. Finally, students use computers to put together a multimedia presentation on whales. Computer programs enable students to access information from a variety of sources. (PVD)
