The Convergence into an Ideal Thought: Critical Thinking and Metacognition
Bennett, Mark
Childhood Education, v92 n1 p75-76 2016
Universal Design for Learning (UDL), an instructional practice for curriculum design, brims with the promise that concepts, however challenging, may be accessible to everyone in a classroom. There is no reason for anyone, including children in special education programs, not to have the right of passage into inquiry within a unit of study. To achieve this purpose, the UDL model for learning includes differentiated instruction as well as pre-determined skill sets necessary to construct models of analytical understanding. However, teachers still need to prompt learners, and open up learners' self-awareness and interests in order to kindle a curiosity in life. This article discusses the importance of engaging students through a catalyst known as metacognition--a best practice no less important than the methods that teachers use to achieve critical understanding in students.
