Snack, Facts
Smith, Suzanne M.
Journal of School Health, v75 n8 p320 Oct 2005
The American diet has undergone substantial changes, a fact that has negatively impacted the dental health of children. Primary prevention is the ideal method to address the current increased incidence of tooth decay. Educating kids, and their parents, about the qualities of snacks as well as the role of frequency of snacking could help to reduce the disparities that exist in oral health in this country. Interventions are particularly effective when initiated at the 5th grade level. Between the ages of 10 and 13, children lose the final deciduous (baby) teeth and develop a full permanent dentition. At this age, children have the aptitude to evaluate different food and drink choices. This skill will have a lifelong impact on dental health and consequently overall health. The activities contained in this teaching technique will provide children with the information and experience to make sound decisions about snacks on their own.
