In October 1980 a national conference on health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and Academic Medical Centers (AMCs) was held by the Association of American Medical Colleges and supported by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, in response to inquiries about the advantages and disadvantages of AMC affiliation with or sponsorship of HMOs. Presentations include: "HMOs and Academic Medical Centers: Prospects for the Eighties" (Bernard W. Nelson); "A Consideration of Mating Rites: The HMO and the AMC" (Ernest W. Saward); "The George Washington University Experience" (Ronald P. Kaufman); "The Hopkins Experience" (J. R. Gaintner); "A North Carolina Experience" (Glenn Wilson); "Vermont Health Plan and the University of Vermont College of Medicine" (Henry M. Tufo); "Relationship of a Family Practice Residency Program to an IPA-HMO: The Wausau Family Practice Center" (Thomas H. Peterson); "Strange Bedfellows: The University of Washington and Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound" (Howard L. Kirz); "Rutgers Community Health Plan--College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey--Rutgers Medical School" (Roger W. Birnbaum); "The Georgetown University Community Health Plan" (Robert R. Huntley); "History of the Harvard Community Health Plan" (Gordon T. Moore); "The Medical Care Group of Washington University" (Lawrence Kahn); "The Relationship Between Brown University Medical School and Rhode Island Group Health Association (1974-1980)" (Robert G. Rosenberg); "The Role of the University of Rochester Medical Center in the Evolution of Local HMOs" (Andrew A. Sorenson); and"Competition in the Medical Marketplace: The Boston Story" (Daniel C.
