Powerlifting: A Suitable High School Elective and After-School Intramural Program
Kozub, Francis M.; Brusseau, Timothy A.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v83 n3 p34-41 Mar 2012
Although weightlifting is part of most high school physical education curricula, the sport of powerlifting is a relatively overlooked activity that men and women of all ages can practice as a lifetime sport. This activity consists of three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. This article describes the benefits of teaching powerlifting as a physical education elective, a community-based option, or an intramural activity. The rules, training recommendations, spotting, and curriculum mapping are presented, as well as how this lifetime sport addresses the national standards. (Contains 2 tables and 3 figures.)
