The speakers at this centennial symposium addressed a wide range of issues pertaining to how the world of the year 2000 is likely to look, given current socioeconomic and technological trends, and how the secondary schools will respond to these changes. A brief welcome and introduction by the moderator, Christopher Berrisford (headmaster of The Harvard School of Los Angeles, California) is followed by the first set of conference papers, grouped under the heading, "Dimensions of the World of 2000." These include the following: "Business and the Economy in the Year 2000," by L. Stanton Williams, chairman and chief executive officer of PPG Industries, Inc.; "Science and Technology in the Lives of the Coming Generation: The Year 2000 and Beyond," by John Patrick Crecine, senior vice president for academic affairs at Carnegie Mellon University; and "The Future of Human Services," by Caroline Bird, author, lecturer, and economist. A transcript of a discussion period follows. The second set of papers, grouped under the heading, "How Secondary Schools Will Respond," includes the following: "Educational Reform: The Next Decade," by Denis P. Doyle, director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute; "The Public Schools' Response to the Challenge of the Year 2000," by Richard C. Wallace, superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools; and "The Response of Private Education," by Gardner P. Dunnan, president of The Dalton School.
