A Day in the Life at DaVita Academy
Weinstein, Margery
Training, v47 n2 p118-120 Feb 2010
When a company name means "giving life," the bar for learning and development programs is held high. In this article, the author describes what it takes to graduate from DaVita Academy, the soft skills training program dialysis services company DaVita offers all its employees. DaVita's chief executive officer, Kent Thiry, states that the Academy brings teammates together and provides an environment to learn about themselves and the DaVita mission. To make DaVita's core values materially relevant: (1) All executive candidates are evaluated explicitly for mission and values fit; (2) All annual professional development reviews done by the CEO include a written section on the mission and values, and how other people experience the executive with respect to each of the values; (3) The company and the top 3,000 leaders are scored by their teams on the values; (4) Core Value Awards are given to honor teammates who are role models for one or more of the core values; and (5) Bonuses are paid out based on exhibiting the characteristics of a role model for the mission and/or core values.
