A 2012 survey of higher education found that 27% of colleges and universities were "mobile ready", that is, allowing students to complete course evaluations via mobile devices, and 26% of schools planned to allow the use of mobile devices for course evaluations within the next year. The purpose of this study was to prepare for this burgeoning of mobile device use in course evaluation by examining student ratings and comments submitted by cell phones, tablets, and computers. An analysis of more than 400,000 student responses to course evaluations at 95 campuses over a 20-month period revealed interesting trends in the mobile device choice of students. Significant differences between devices were found in response rate and number of comments typed by undergraduate and graduate students, but the mean ratings of the instructor and course were not significantly different. Suggestions for future research on mobile devices in course evaluation are discussed.
