Quantitative Data and Immigration Research. RIIES Research Notes No. 2.
Couch, Stephen R., Ed.; And Others
This volume consists of the proceedings of two sessions--"Quantitative Data and Research on International Migration" and the follow-up workshop on this topic--held within the 1978 convention of the International Studies Association plus an addendum of related research notes. The papers present immigration as a data-producing process yielding a wealth of information which must be centralized, analyzed, and disseminated. The papers include the following: (1) The Study of the New Immigration: Some Political and Methodological Deterrents (R. S. Bryce-Laporte); (2) Sources of Data for the Study of International Migration (D. Heisel); (3) Sources of Data for the Study of U.S. Immigration (E. P. Kraly); (4) Critical Issues in Using Government Data Collected Primarily for Non-Research Purposes (G. Cardenas); (5) Some Thoughts on the Study of Immigration Patterns within the Modern World Economy: Established and Alternative Data Sources (E. M. Petras); (6) Some Data and Methodological Issues Regarding Research on the Economic Progress of Immigrants (B. R. Chiswick); (7) Greener Pastures: American Expatriation and Expatriates (V. B. Shaw); (8) A Residential Survey of Illegal Aliens (L. Hunt); (9) Discussion (of the preceding three papers) (C. B. Keely); (10) Note on the Spatial Diffusion of Nurses from the Commonwealth Caribbean to Britain: Quantitative Methods and Migration Studies (S. B. Jones-Hendrickson); (11) Issues in the Measurement of External Migration (G. W. Roberts); (12) Note on Limitations of Data and External Migration in the Eastern Caribbean (G. W. Roberts); and (13) Quantitative Immigration Data, Scientific Knowledge and Public Policy: Possibilities, Limitations and Interrelationships (S. R. Couch). Three appendices give conference information, lists of publications, and notes on the contributors. (VM)
