Race, Culture, and Diversity
Moore, Alyssa Morishima
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v18 n4 p10 2006
The author relates an incident that she shared with her two children about a mean man who yelled awful racial slurs at her, and discussing with them how hatred and racism could drive a grown man to say such terrible things. They talked about how horrible prejudice and meanness are; how when the two of them are mean to each other, they are learning patterns of hate. She was also touched that her children readily recognized beauty, kindness, and benevolence. Thus, an incident that was hurtful to the author was turned into a positive lesson for her children in the hope that they will grow up to be accepting, considerate, and respectful adults who will not be racially biased or culturally insensitive.
