Fit to be Tied! The Relevance of Ties in Teaching Physical Education: Umpires and Referees Must Decide Plays One Way or the Other, but Games Require No Such Decisive Conclusion
McLaughlin, Douglas W.; Torres, Cesar R.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v76 n9 p38 Nov-Dec 2005
This article has defended the notion that ties are legitimate results of sport contests and often represent the most accurate measure of relative athletic ability. In this sense, ties fully serve and honor the central purpose of competitive sport. Moreover, the authors discuss the following purposes for this article: (1) it will establish an enlightened view of ties as meaningful contest resolutions and illuminate it with the distinction between outcome seekers and resolution seekers; (2) it will offer possibilities for fostering an appreciation of ties in physical education instructional settings; and (3) it will discuss the benefits that this approach to ties has for physical education and for sports culture in general.
