Information Systems as a Social Space: Collaborative Teaching of Social Literacies to Technical Students
Kalil, Claudia; Monson, Jo; Nodoba, Gaontebale
Business Communication Quarterly, v73 n2 p205-212 2010
This article describes a successful experimental collaborative teaching project to deliver a short course to develop work-relevant social literacies in technical students. Heterogeneous work contexts require both students and educators to find ways to integrate thinking and practices across disciplines. Teaching social literacies to information technology students makes sense when they will encounter various forms of difference in a year of postgraduate study, comprising team and extended project work, and in their professional lives. Educators must find ways to prepare students to be aware of their own cultural positioning and subjectivity, to actively value and use the diversity within their professional groups, whether researching business processes or engaging in community outreach.
