Fast Forward to New Futures: Improving Access to Careers in Information Technology. Community College Models from the AACC-SBC Excelerator Project
Villagran-Glover, Frances, Ed.; Barnett, Lynn, Ed.
American Association of Community Colleges (NJ3)
The AACC/SBC Excelerator project enabled community colleges and their partners in six states to expand special outreach and technology workforce training programs to people who are often ignored in the new economy: low-income adults, members of racial and ethnic minorities, welfare-to-work clients, at-risk youth, people with disabilities, and women. The effort has paid off: 75% of the participants successfully completed their training programs, earning technology and job search skills as well as college credits, certificates, and degrees. This report focuses on lessons drawn from the experiences of the community colleges that participated in this one-year project. It also offers recommendations to help guide other institutions in developing similar programs. A list of selected resources is included. (Contains 1 figure and 4 tables.)
