Presidential Spouses: Worth Taking Seriously, and Worth Paying
Moser, Kate
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n13 pB7 Nov 2008
Mrs. Deborah J. Cofer is one of many presidential spouses who balk at the thought of being paid for their work--whether because they relish the freedom to take a night off or because they think of it as a natural part of their relationships with their partners. Mrs. Cofer believes that their mission is to enhance students' lives and they do not have to be compensated monetarily for that. But experts describe a growing need to decide whether presidents' partners should be rewarded financially. According to Raymond D. Cotton, a lawyer in Washington who specializes in presidential contracts and whose firm has studied the matter of spousal pay, presidential spouses are the unheralded mostly heroines but also heroes of higher education and they work like hell. This article discusses the issue concerning the appropriateness of rewarding presidential spouses financially.
