From High Finance to Highly Rewarding
Valenzano, Joseph M., Jr.
Exceptional Parent, v36 n12 p58-62 Dec 2006
The author of this article talks to Robert Kreider about why helping people with special needs is so important to him and his colleagues. Robert Kreider is the president and chief executive officer of The Devereux Foundation, the nation's largest non-profit provider of behavioral healthcare services to children and adults with emotional, behavioral, educational and developmental disabilities. Kreider tells how he and his team restructured Devereux's balance sheets and the foundation's financial structure. He states that the path for Devereux is to be the provider, charity, and employer of choice. He articulated a philosophy of care in a quality statement that said treatment is visualized and is going to be positive behavioral approaches that were successful in research and effective for the target of diagnosis. More than half of Devereux's board members have a child with special needs and in care with Devereux which gives those board members passion about participating. In differentiating Devereux from others, Kreider states that they have very strong quality management and risk management programs with regular site visits. Not many organizations have the sort of overall corporate resources to provide the kind of check on the quality of care and facilities that Devereux provides. They also have tremendous diversity in their programs.
