Leaders as Storytellers: Finding Waldo
Forman, Janis
Business Communication Quarterly, v70 n3 p369-374 2007
The notion of storytelling is a compelling framework for students, perhaps because people appear to be "hardwired" for stories. Communication theorist Fisher (1987) sees humans as storytellers and believes that "all forms of human communication need to be seen fundamentally as stories--symbolic interpretations of aspects of the world, occurring in time and shaped by history, culture, and character." Educational psychologist Applebee (1978) found that storytelling is at the root of children's increasingly sophisticated understanding of coherence in discourse. This article opens with the simple "Waldo" story shared between a CEO and his son, which ultimately triggered the CEO's imagination to link this aspect of his life--raising his son--to his leadership in the evolving story of his company's growth. The author goes on to present several dimensions of storytelling and to describe how he has used storytelling as a framework to teach communication to MBA students in a course that combines corporate strategy, communication, and leadership.
