The Challenge of Isolation. Professional Development--Your First Year
Cookson, Peter W., Jr.
Teaching Pre K-8, v36 n2 p14, 16 Oct 2005
One of the ironies of teaching is that it is one of the most social occupations, but it is also one of the most isolating professions. Most schools are organized in an eggcrate manner, making professional collaborations difficult. In what other business would a professional not have easy access to a telephone? What other professional lives are regulated by bells? In today's schools, teachers are faced with so many complex tasks, and with such a diverse student body, that collaboration and sharing are required. This article provides suggestions for new teachers for creating a professional environment that is both supportive and productive. These tips include: (1) Utilizing mentors or other support activities for new teachers; (2) Helping to form peer support groups with other new teachers; (3) Getting to know your students' parents; (4) Joining professional organizations; and (5) Utilizing the worldwide web as a resource.
