In this article, the author talks about an internal content management system that they have created at Calvin College. It is a hybrid of CMS and intranet that organizes Web site content and a variety of internal tools to help librarians complete their daily tasks. Hobbes is a Web-based tool that uses Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts written in Perl to store, query, and return results from data stored in a series of related SQL tables. They added tools as they were thought of and created, and placed them according to their function under tabs that are strung along the top of the Hobbes environment. Here, the author describes each tab and some of the major tools (or tables) placed within it. Among other things, the author talks about the challenges that they face and the future of Hobbes.
