The current status of coal mining technology training in 25 educational institutions throughout the United States is examined. Surveys of these institutions asked for information related to: (1) name and type of institution; (2) number of years in mining training; (3) type of degree granted; (4) number of students enrolled in underground and surface training from 1968 to 1978 and projected to enroll through 1981; (5) number of graduates and percentages of those placed in mining and related industries; (6) number of full- and part-time instructors and their qualifications with regard to years and types of mining experience, educational background, and certification; and (7) program costs in terms of the college's total investment and student costs. Curriculum information is also provided by each of the responding colleges with the intent to allow institutions with on-going mining programs to make comparisons with programs of other institutions, and to provide institutions contemplating a mining program with an opportunity to review curriculum information of currently operating programs.
