Developmental Bouldering for Elementary School Students
Martinez, Ray; Fader, Tim
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v18 n1 p7-9 Sep-Oct 2004
Physical educators have an opportunity to promote outdoor activities to students. In elementary school, physical educators can introduce non-mechanized activities that students can then enjoy in outdoor environments. One of these activities is bouldering, which is climbing or traversing across a climbing wall a few feet off the ground. Bouldering offers lifelong physical activity that challenges the mind and the body. Its benefits include health and skill-related fitness enhancement such as muscular strength and endurance, balance, and coordination. These attributes can be maximized through challenging, developmentally appropriate bouldering sequences that use critical thinking exercises as students plan their next move. Through perseverance students can be successful in their own comfort levels while accomplishing bouldering goals. After teachers introduce their students to basic movements on the climbing wall, they can challenge them further by using an interdisciplinary approach that addresses both cognitive and psychomotor learning. With this approach, they can help students identify the relationship between mind and body in an enjoyable and fun activity. This article shares bouldering activities that allow for integrated applications that challenge mind and body in new and different ways for elementary school children.
