New York City has been an inspiration for some of the finest and most memorable children's literature published. Regardless of whether or not readers have ever visited the Big Apple, their understanding of New York is likely to be informed by the representations found in children's books. In addition, scholars of children's literature recognize the role the city itself has played in the development of the children's book industry. The images of New York that readers encounter are shaped by the experiences of the creators of children's literature who live and work in the city. In order to find out more about the origin and nature of the portrayals of New York City in children's books, the members of the Children's Literature Assembly (CLA) organized and sponsored a workshop devoted to New York City in the world of children's literature. This daylong workshop took place during the post-convention of last year's National Council of Teachers of English annual convention, which was held in New York City. Speakers were invited to share their experiences living the writer's or artist's life in New York City. New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers alike were asked to reflect on how the city functions as a setting in their work and how it has influenced their creative and professional lives. A dozen children's authors and illustrators offered insight into ways to share New York City with young readers through literature ranging from picture books to nonfiction to young adult novels. Each speaker highlighted what New York City has meant to them and further inspired a love of the city in audience members.
