Left-Behind Children in Rural Primary Schools: The Case of Sichuan Province
Liang, Wenyan; Hou, Longlong; Chen, Wentao
Chinese Education and Society, v41 n5 p84-99 Sep-Oct 2008
During China's economic transformation, much of the rural population migrated to urban areas in search of employment opportunities. "Left-behind children" are the product of this phenomenon and need significant attention. Our study adopted elementary school students in Sichuan province as the subjects. After carefully studying their academic conditions, we discovered that the "left-behind" experience has negative effects on these children's schoolwork. Children who have had both parents or the mother leave need special attention. Schools and teachers must take on an important role in solving the issue of left-behind children to make up for the negative effects of the absence of parent-child education on these children.
