Project SOAR (Stress on Analytical Reasoning).
Carmichael, J. W., Jr.; And Others
Project SOAR (Stress on Analytic Reasoning) is a pre-college summer program for natural, health, and mathematics science majors jointly developed and conducted by the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics/Computer Science and Physics/Pre-Engineering at Xavier University of Louisiana. The program objective was to increase performance in and reduce attrition from entry-level science and mathematics courses. Project SOAR is comprised of three components: (1) Piagetian laboratory experiments to improve general problem-solving skills; (2) specific instruction to improve those analytical reasoning/reading skills needed to perform well on standardized exams; and (3) vocabulary building. This notebook contains the 20 three-hour laboratory experiments, each organized as a learning cycle. The experiments, five each from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, were developed as units of four each to be completed during a given week. The fifth day of each of the five working weeks is devoted to instruction in simple BASIC programming. (Author/DS)
