Basic Metrics--Part I, II and III. Teacher's Guide [and] Student Materials.
Noyes, Joan
Individualized classroom activities for use in learning centers to teach junior and senior high school students about the metric system are provided. The activities are organized into three sequential parts, each of which takes from four to six hours to complete. There is a teacher's guide and a student booklet for each part. The teachers' guides contain directions for organizing the learning centers and activities, copies of all student worksheets and pre- and posttests. The student booklets contain background readings and specific directions to guide the student from one activity to the next in the learning centers. In Part I, students identify the advantages of the metric system to the consumer, identify metric terms and symbols used in measuring length, and apply metric principles to solve problems in linear measure. Part II teaches students how to change prefixes and how to find area and volume/capacity. In Part III students learn how to measure mass and temperature in the metric system. Many different types of activities are provided. Students measure items in meters and centimeters, find the volume of containers using a liter measure and water, measure the weights of dry and wet sponges using metric scales and weights, prepare a comic strip showing how to measure in liters, make a bulletin board portraying the advantages of the metric system, and write an editorial which explains the advantages of the metric system and why it should be adopted.
