Pioneer CESA Guidance Project: A Staff Development Program for School Counselors. Individual Counseling.
Warner, Richard W., Jr.
This module is based on the idea that the better the relationship between the counselor and the client, the greater the chances are that the client will have a successful experience in counseling. It is assumed that while this relationship is necessary, it is not sufficient. Those holding this view perceive the counseling process as consisting of three basic and interdependent stages: (1) engagement in the process, (2) commitment to the process, and (3) attitudinal or behavioral change. This module is designed to assist the school counselor in developing the necessary skills to help clients more through these stages in counseling. The module as a whole contains 17 indicators by which the counselor's ability to conduct individual counseling with clients may be gauged. This document is one of seven staff development programs which target performance skills of school counselors. The programs include the competency areas of planning, individual counseling, group facilitation, in-service training, consultation, information processing, and legal/ethical concerns. (Author/LEB)
