Hispanics in Higher Education: On the Move!
Kennen, Estela Marin
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v71 n3 p59-63 Nov 2005
The American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) is a new national organization "dedicated to improving the quality of higher education." The AAHHE believes higher education institutions can, and should, do a better job of "meeting the needs of a changing US demography." AAHHE's roots lie in the Hispanic Caucus of the now-defunct American Association of Higher Education (AAHE). Alfredo de los Santos, research professor at Arizona State University, past board member of the Hispanic Caucus, and current vice president of AAHHE, explains that the Hispanic Caucus wanted to bring in young scholars and use AAHHE as a pathway to a profession in academia. Creating opportunities for individuals to present their research and ideas was one step toward accomplishing that. But AAHE was not geared toward that type of professional development, and it became obvious that at some point an organization with greater scope than the Hispanic Caucus was needed. AAHHE is pronounced simply ah-hee, or aji. This flavorful word is an apt analogy for a group looking to work together with others to enhance higher education quality for Latinos everywhere. Its two main goals are: "to develop Latino/a faculty and senior administrators as well as serve as a leading research and advocacy group for Hispanic higher education issues."
