You Can Save Money AND Teach Valuable Skills: In-House Yearbook Production
Toroni, John
Tech Directions, v66 n2 p13-15 Sep 2006
The author teaches at a small, rural school district (K-12 enrollment is 280) in New York's northern Catskill Mountains. According to him, there is no industry in this area and little in the way of commercial business, so when they need to raise money for "extra expenses," it requires a lot of effort. When the cost of publishing their yearbook, "The Jeffersonian," outstripped their ability to raise funds to pay for it, they found themselves at a crossroads. After three straight years of falling short of their monetary goal--thus forcing them to cut pages and color and the Board of Education to pick up the tab--they had to try something different. During its summer meeting, the community shared-decision-making committee decided that Jefferson Central School should go it alone and print the yearbook in house. The author found himself the lucky guy assigned to get the job done. It turned out to be a great experience for him and his students. In this article, the author shares what they have learned from this experience and encourages other technology educators to give it a try. (Contains 1 table and 9 photos.)
