Policies & Practices: Looking Ahead: Thinking about Next Term's Program Plans
Wilford, Sara
Early Childhood Today, v20 n7 p10-11 May 2006
The author talks about the benefit publications she received, being a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The first one is entitled "NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria". This document outlines a new accreditation system with 10 new program standards. Each standard is accompanied by a beautifully articulated, brief rationale. Believing that they capture a strong vision of professionalism, caring relationships, and positive environments for the benefit of children, she lists them here. Among other things, she discovers steps to achieving accreditation. The second publication is entitled "Mentoring Early Childhood Educators", written by Carol B. Hillman. Subtitled "A handbook for supervisors, administrators and teachers," she says that Carol?s book will inspire early childhood directors to: (1) Spend more time in classrooms; (2) Write "letters" to teachers that incorporate classroom observations and seek teacher responses; (3) Support ongoing teacher learning and development; (4) Use effective strategies for handling personally challenging issues that inevitable arise; and (5) Establish caring relationships that honor individual strengths.
