College for America: Student-Centered, Competency-Based Education
Clerkin, Kris; Simon, Yvonne
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v46 n6 p6-13 2014
This article presents a new model of education that works with employers to help their employees gain the skills and credentials needed for promotions and career mobility. Southern New Hampshire University's College for America, a competency-based education model for working adults, increases their access to, and the convenience of higher education, while decreasing costs. The program was designed and runs in close cooperation with employers, while the skills developed are highly relevant to the world of work. With no courses or grades, the model is project-based and learning coaches assist students in making their way through the project mastery cycle. In addition, online resources are extremely user friendly, and analysis of the information collected is used to support student progress.
