Comparison and Association of Intellectual Capital: An Investigation and Measurement of the Value of Intellectual Capital Assets and Their Contribution to Stakeholder Perception within the Framework of Higher Education
Helm Stevens, Roxanne
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, Alliant International University, San Diego
PROBLEM: Many of the preliminary approaches to strategic management of intellectual capital or knowledge assets have not been attempted in the not-for-profit arena. Additionally, because there is no marketplace value for not-for-profit firms or a valuation system for intangible assets, the identification and measurement necessary for efficient and effective use of knowledge assets has not been sufficiently assessed in not-for-profit higher education. This study was undertaken for the research purpose of determining the relationships and differences between the components of intellectual capital human capital, structural capital, and relational capital--within the not-for-profit environment of higher education. This study will attempt to determine the best predictors of relational capital utilizing stakeholder perception. Specifically, this study will endeavor to identify and measure stakeholder's perception of the value of intellectual capital within the not-for-profit framework of higher education by investigating how stakeholder groups view intellectual capital and if intellectual capital assets contribute to stakeholder perception of value. In practical application, determining the value drivers, indicators, and causal agents of human and structural capital will enhance the ability of leaders and managers to determine which intellectual capital assets to leverage. It will help Institutions of Higher Education (HEI) faced with decisions of whether or not to spend money on capacity-building activities. Intellectual capital, a critical resource in the competitive positioning of not-for-profit enterprises of higher education, can be a differentiating factor. If the management of knowledge assets represents an opportunity for enhancing organizational value, which aids in a competitive opportunity, then leadership will need to determine the value of intellectual capital assets to drive the enhancement of knowledge through the allocation of resources. Therefore, a significance of the study is that possible insights gained might help HEI leverage knowledge as a competitive differentiator. The general importance of the study lies in its ability to enable leadership to understand ways to leverage resources and maximize stakeholder value perception. Leaders might also become cognizant that stakeholder perception could be a strategic factor in the management of knowledge assets. METHOD: The research approach used for this study was both descriptive and correlational. Correlation measures the relationship between two or more quantifiable variables with the correlation coefficient represented as a number between -1 and +1 that measures a linear relationship of strength and direction. The magnitude of the number represents the strength of the correlation. Additionally, this study will utilize the t-test to measure the differences between groups as well as ANOVA, Repeated Measures ANOVA, and correlation (Pearson's r) to detect relationships between the variables. RESULTS: Since the current state of the literature is quite recent, the adoption of a structured approach will help by providing insights into the interrelationships between the measures and constructs of interest. The results will advance the current state of theory on the topic of intellectual capital within the context of not-for-profit institutions of higher education.
