A Lesson in Vectors "Plain" and Simple
Bradshaw, David M.
PRIMUS, v14 n2 p97-103 2004
The United States Military Academy (USMA) has a four course core mathematics curriculum that is studied by all students. The third course is MA205, Calculus II; a multivariate calculus course filled with practical applications. During a Problem Solving Lab (PSL), students participated in a hands-on exercise with multiple vector operations, including vector addition, scalar multiplication, dot product and cross product. The lab took place outside on an area at USMA that is referred to as the "Plain." This article outlines the PSL and offers an idea to other instructors on getting students involved with their own learning. (Contains 2 figures.)
