No matter how dedicated they may be, some teachers are daunted by extreme challenges. Carol Agler, music director at the Ohio State School for the Blind (OSSB), is not one of those teachers. Since joining the OSSB staff 11 years ago, Agler has revived the school's long-dormant band program and created its first marching band. Next January, she will lead her students to their debut on the international stage: a performance at the Tournament of Roses Parade at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Although she'd known she wanted to be a music teacher since she was a freshman in high school in Columbus, Ohio, Agler did not set out specifically to teach students with visual impairments. After completing college at Ohio State University, she took a job as a general music teacher at Circleville Junior High in Columbus, then gave private lessons and substitute-taught while raising her children. In 1993 she took a part-time post as the first music teacher at Marburn Academy, a private school for students with learning disabilities. Five years later she jumped at the chance to join the K-12 OSSB as full-time music director. Seems Agler is doing just about everything to augment OSSB's music program. She not only meets with elementary students three times a week, junior high students three to five times a week, and high school students who elect to take music three times a week, but she also oversees two choirs and, four years ago, relaunched the school's band after discovering a cache of instruments on campus--the remnants of a program that was disbanded 13 years before.
