Identification of Simple and Compound Vowels by First Graders.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether by structuring and sequencing the same monosyllabic CVC, CVVC, and CVCe English words in two different patterns (EI and EII), administered with the same controlled procedures, boys and girls in grade one would be facilitated in detecting, identifying, and discriminating among single vowels and their combined forms; in associating them with their specific pronunciations; and in transferring this knowledge to other words and other compound vowel units after a limited but extensive period of treatment. The study was also designed to observe the strategies which the children employed and the difficulties they experienced in identifying these words. The first treatment condition began with CVC and CVCe words in contrast; the second began with CVC and CVVC words. First graders, randomly assigned to one control and each of two experimental conditions, were pretested on a list of 48 randomized words, and posttested on the same words plus a separate list of 24 synthetic words of the same type and distribution. Results show that acquisition of simple and compound vowel units goes on simultaneously; that children can learn vowel values earlier than they are usually taught; and that the consonants with which the vowels occur influence the ease with which they are pronounced.
