Voluntary Support of Education 1987-1988.
Council for Aid to Education, New York, NY.
The 29th edition of a publication featuring statistics on voluntary support of education is presented. Three sections have the following titles: (1) "Colleges and Universities" (including national estimates of expenditures and voluntary support, and survey results noting voluntary support by type of institution, voluntary support by source, special forms of giving, voluntary support by purpose, alumni giving, and technical notes); (2) "Details of Support by Institution" (definitions of classifications, colleges and universities, and independent elementary and secondary schools); and (3) "Independent Elementary and Secondary Schools" (survey results: voluntary support by type of school and by source, special forms of giving, voluntary support by purpose, advancement-program expenditures, and endowment). This is the first survey report since 1975, and the third in 25 years, to record a year-to-year decline in private giving to U.S. colleges and universities and independent elementary and secondary schools. Some other survey results indicate: contributions from alumni and nonalumni individuals fell across the board in 1987-88; proceeds from estate settlements increased by $104 million from the previous year; and support from business corporations through employee matching-gift programs leveled off in 1987-88 after rising at an annual rate of 21% since 1976-77. Five appendices offer college and university data, independent school data, and data on colleges and universities, 1949-50 to 1987-88. (SM)
