Corporate Support of Education. Research Report. Council for Aid to Education.
Council for Aid to Education, New York, NY.
A report based on data from the 14th annual Survey of Corporate Contributions cosponsored by the Conference Board and the Council for Aid to Education is presented. Usable questionnaires were returned by 328 companies, which account for three-fifths of the total pretax net income and over one-third of estimated total contributions and educational support of the entire population of nearly three million corporations in the United States. Highlights of the survey are as follows: corporate contributions to education and to all causes continued the slowdown that began in 1985; education received the largest share (37%) of the $1.68 billion given to all causes by the 328 survey companies; colleges and universities secured 69% of education dollars; contributions declined as a share of corporate earnings; noncash gifts of company products and property fell while cash contributions to education increased; almost two-fifths of total contributions were made by corporate foundations; and the top 25 contributors from the manufacturing and service sectors together provided two-thirds of all education support reported by all companies. An appendix discusses facts about the report (conducting the survey, measuring total contributions, and definitions of contributions and financial data). (SM)
