The purpose of this study was to better understand the practices associated with building a culture of evidence and to identify the factors influencing the success of such an endeavor. By definition, a culture of evidence is based upon practices employing data and research to inform decision making at all levels of the institution, with the outcome of ensuring higher levels of success for all students. This case study investigated the practices, perceptions, and opinions of the faculty of one California community college as it built its culture of evidence in response to accreditation requirements. Consistent with culture change research, a mixed method approach was employed for this study. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used, including a survey, focused interviews, and document analysis. Findings were consistent with the literature and indicated that as the college worked to build its culture of evidence, some practices were more successfully implemented than others. Factors affecting the success of the change initiative included: (a) relevance to the practitioner; (b) control; (c) trust; (d) communication; (e) consistence with local culture; (f) structure; and (g) capacity and resources.
