Centro de Estudios Puertoriquenos Bulletin, v2 n8 Spr 1990
This theme issue of the "Centro Bulletin" examines media stereotypes of Latinos and presents examples of alternatives. "From Assimilation to Annihilation: Puerto Rican Images in U.S. Films" (R. Perez) traces the representation of Puerto Ricans from the early days of television to the films of the 1970s. "The Latino 'Boom' in Hollywood" (C. Fusco) examines Latino involvement, thematic treatment, and values in recent commercial films marketed for Chicanos. "From the Margin to the Center: Puerto Rican Cinema in the United States" (L. Jimenez) and "The Chicano Alternative Film Movement" (T. Ybarra Frausto) document the experiences of Puerto Rican and Chicano film makers during the 1960s and 1970s. An interview with independent filmmaker Jose Garcia Torres focuses on the politics behind the production of a public television documentary. "Not Just Black and White: AIDS Media and People of Color" (C. Saalfield and R. Navarro) reviews current films on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). "Unofficial Stories: Documentaries by Latinas and Latin American Women" (L. Kotz) focuses on new productions that document the Latina experience. "Puerto Rico: Hacia un cine nacional" (K. Garcia), in Spanish, emphasizes recent feature-length films that reflect the national Puerto Rican culture. An interview with Diego de la Texera recounts the attempt by Sandino Films to create a national Puerto Rican cinema and discusses the problems of financing independent films. "TELEVISA, Mexico's Multi-national" (J. Sinclair) explores the relationship between a monopolistic Mexican media conglomerate and American capital. "Cultura y grupos populares en la historia viva de Puerto Rico hoy" (L. Milagros Gonzalez), in Spanish, discusses the need for the media to acknowledge the everyday sources of Latino culture. A list of 60 films and videotapes is included. (FMW)
