Adolescent Health Promotion Groups: A Primer for Milieu Therapists
Puskar, Kathryn; Bernardo, Lisa Marie; Stark, Kirsti Hetager; Frazier, Leann
Residential Treatment for Children & Youth, v25 n1 p39-53 2008
Adolescents who are required to live away from their families of origin face many challenges that can affect mood and mental health. Milieu therapists (mental health associates) working with adolescents in a residential treatment center may be expected to provide group activities that promote mental health. It is important for new group leaders to have training prior to group sessions and ongoing supervision. The purposes of this article are (a) to describe the mental health of adolescents, (b) to delineate the basics of the therapeutic group, and (c) to offer tips for leading health promotion groups. (Contains 3 tables.)
