Joining Forces: A Response to Kathy Rentz from the European Perspective
Louhiala-Salminen, Leena
Business Communication Quarterly, v73 n1 p16-20 2010
In this article, the author responds to Kathy Rentz. She happily joins forces for pedagogically defensible teaching conditions and gives a brief "activist" account from the European perspective. However, rather than "European," she emphasizes that for the most part, this response looks at business communication teachers' working conditions from the perspective of one European country, that is, Finland. This has to be pointed out as the circumstances in which European business communication academics work vary from country to country more than they do in the United States. Although the European academic environment is in many ways different from that of the United States, the author can very well recognize and appreciate Kathy's message--and agrees wholeheartedly. She contends that it is high time for business communication teachers to enter into a discussion about their own value for the business community. The point highlighted in Kathy's presentation, that is, "what business communication teachers teach may well be the most valuable courses in their business students' programs of study," is an achievement business communication teachers should be proud of. The author closes her reflections on a more positive note: (1) about positive developments in her own unit; and (2) about positive developments in the Association for Business Communication (ABC).
