Kindness Curbs Kids' Name-Calling
Saxon, Rebekah
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n6 p8-13 Feb 2005
In this article, the author discusses the impact of name-calling towards the student's academic performance and emotions and cites some measures on how should teachers address this problem in order to facilitate effective learning among students. Psychologists recognize that name-calling and other forms of verbal bullying and harassment are more than just child's play. Students who are the targets of these verbal assaults often experience a drop in grades since their attention is drawn from schoolwork to surviving a hostile learning environment. When students are using names that refer to a specific group of people, the intervention needs to be done carefully and consistently. Here, the author provides two successful strategies to combat these forms of intolerance and name-calling and recommends teachers to teach children the importance of reaching out and to make sure that they are educated about all the differences that exist among people.
